SAM'S
PRINTS
Francis’
work in lithography, etching, screenprinting and also his montotypes has been
as influential and as well received internationally as his painting. His highly
personal style of spontaneous, immediate application of paint to canvas and
paper gave rise to a new French term which was soon internationalized: tachisme,
in effect the art of spots and stains.
Remarkably, Francis has been able to transfer this same combination of spontaneous
gesture and signature abstract forms to graphic media, which appear to be
as intuitive and direct for him as painting. He stated, “What has happened
is that I have found a way to get into that machine [the printing press].
When I am working with these prints, I am the paper, I am the paint, I am
the machine. I am not trying to ‘make something’”
